A climate action plan is a comprehensive strategy developed by governments, organizations, or communities to mitigate and adapt to climate change. It typically includes a set of goals, policies, and actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, protecting natural resources, and building resilience to the impacts of climate change.
Led by the City of El Paso, the Chihuahuan Desert Climate Collaborative (CDCC) consists of stakeholders, partners, organizations, subject matter experts, and community members from the City of El Paso, the City of Socorro, the Village of Vinton, the Town of Horizon City, the Town of Anthony, the Town of Clint, the City of San Elizario, El Paso County, Hudspeth County, the Rio Grande Council of Governments, the El Paso Metropolitan Planning Organization, and Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo.
The Chihuahuan Desert Climate Collaborative has the potential to significantly benefit the region. By fostering collaboration among different municipalities, counties, and regional planning bodies, the collaborative can promote a coordinated approach to addressing climate change challenges. This could lead to more efficient use of resources, reduced duplication of efforts, and increased effectiveness in achieving common goals.
Implementing a climate action plan involves translating the goals, policies, and actions outlined in the plan into concrete steps and initiatives that governments, organizations, businesses, and communities can carry out. A climate action plan is a multi-faceted approach involving a combination of policy, investment, education, collaboration, and innovation across different sectors and levels of our region. It's an ongoing process that requires commitment, dedication, and continuous adaptation to achieve meaningful progress towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
If the plan is adopted as planned in the fall of 2025, we can start work on implementation as soon as it’s adopted. This will be an ongoing process that requires continuous adaptation to achieve meaningful progress. The Region will be held accountable by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and we’ll have to provide them with regular implementation progress reports through 2027.
